North Carolina

I am in Elizabeth City North Carolina. We went through the Great Dismal Swamp. The Great Dismal Swamp is about 40 feet long. It was dug by slaves in the 1700's. That was 308 years ago! When we were going through the Great Dismal Swamp I saw some pretty weird trees. Some looked like Dr.Seuss made them. Some looked like ballerinas in tutus and others were growing out of the water. I saw a couple of trees that were very droopy and tall. Those trees also had little spike balls on them. The world's biggest Coast Guard base is in Elizabeth City. At the Coast Guard base they still make blimps. I like North Carolina.

Stay Cool,

Blake

  1. Dear Blake,

Wow, North Carolina sounds very strange and mysterious, especially all those trees half-in and half-out of the water! It does, indeed, sound like the imaginative doctor, or Tolkien, or the great master maker himself had a hand in their placement. I think the farther south you go the more you are going to see marvels of Nature along the areas where the sea meets and interacts with the land--aided and accelerated by the warmer temperatures.

It is really a special for us and all followers of your blog to read about your continuing adventures. You are seeing and experiencing things that few people ever get the chance or opportunity to know. I'm pleased that you are on this fantastic voyage and are making the most of it. Keep up the good work of posting your adventures and thoughts. You have the makings of a great writer in your genes and through your wonderful personality and character.

We had our first significant snowfall of the season last night. Awoke this morning to see a winter wonderland and the ground cover crisscrossed with crazy tracks and patterns from the night creatures. Love to you all!

  2. Hi Blake,

I really enjoy reading your blogs and hearing about your adventures. You really got lucky on Thanksgiving, didn't you? Have you started reading Harry Potter yet? I noticed them on your bookshelf when your Mom did the video of the inside of the boat. It snowed in South Portland last night and was beautiful. Drea (the next door neighbor) and I hung the lights on the juniper trees beside our front door yesterday just before it snowed. REmember how the people across the street from me always had tons of lights and lawn decorations every year? They don't have anything this year! It's so weird. We can't figure out why. Joe is going to Portugal for Christmas to see his godson who is there studying Portugese for the year. I'm not sure what I am doing, but I might go to see my friends in Hartford, Connecticut. I do hope you have a wonderful Christmas in the sunny south! We miss you a lot here. Give my love to all your family.

    Love, Mary
